Why are the Best Brothel Managers Usually Female?

Since prostitution became legal in Australia in 2005, women have been making the independent decision to change their career. The societal stigma around sex-work has been liberated and women are choosing to empower themselves with economic freedom and reclaim the expression of women’s sexuality.

Female professionals in traditional corporate jobs still experience unequal pay, with women earning an average of 14% less across all industries and occupations compared to men’s average full-time earnings. Women in the sex-work industry, however, earn equal wages to male escorts and experience gender equality in the workplace.

Most brothels allow women to work when they want, further liberating them from the traditional working world with strict 9-5 hours.

It is clear why women choose to work in a brothel, after all, why would you work 50 hours a week in a stuffy office, when you could work for yourself in a brothel with fewer hours for more money? But why do women choose to run brothels?

Why Women Run Brothels

Why the best brothel managers are usually femaleIt is a common misconception that women who own and run brothels are just former prostitutes that have moved on. Whilst that may be why some women have chosen to run a brothel, there are also many other reasons.

Historical Reasons

Historically, women owned and ran all of the brothels in Australia. In the 1900s laws around prostitution made it illegal for men to own brothels, so those that existed were run by women. It wasn’t until the 1970s where most of the societies views around prostitution were liberated and later in 1990 when the Australian Institute of Criminology recommended that the laws around prostitution change as they were ineffective and endangered sex workers.

This historical ownership of brothels could be one of the reasons why any Australian brothel that’s worth its salt is run by women.

Economic Reasons

Women run brothels for the same reason they enter into sex-work, or any other type of work, for the money. If a brothel is run well, it can become a very financially lucrative business. That is not to say that owning a brothel doesn’t come without its challenges. Each state has its own laws and regulations around prostitution, it can also be difficult to advertise your business, as there are set rules around this too. However, once the brothel is established they can be a profitable business for a woman to own.

Safety Reasons

Only 10% of sex work happens in regulated brothels, the other 90% happens on illegal premises. This can be dangerous for the girls that work there and the clients that use them. One reason that women may run more brothels that men, is that they are more compassionate and focused on providing a safe environment for sex-workers and their clients, whilst men may be less focused on registering their brothel.

Why Sex-Workers Choose Female-Run Brothels

Support and trust with female managersWelcoming

Visiting a brothel for the first time, as a worker or a client can be scary. Especially as the media often depicts them as gloomy buildings with large threatening security guards outside, that will rough-up anyone that doesn’t do as they are told. A female manager in reception is far more hospitable and looks more welcoming to work with.

Trustworthiness

Both women and men in the industry, or as clients, are more likely to trust a women owner than a man. Prospective female workers can relate to female owners and can look up to them as role models. Whilst men that own brothels aren’t seen as untrustworthy, women are seen as less threatening. Female owners can help workers and clients feel more comfortable and relaxed, which is often needed at a brothel.

Safety

Even working in a registered, regulated and legal brothel there is an element of danger involved, as there is at any place of employment. Female owners are less likely to take advantage of their employees or assault them physically, this can be a major concern for women in the industry, especially those just starting out. Female brothel managers typically offer a safer and more welcoming environment for sex-workers.
